Porygon Evolution: Porygon2 and Porygon-Z
Porygon evolution has two separate trade-item stages. Porygon becomes Porygon2 when traded while holding an Upgrade, then Porygon2 becomes Porygon-Z when traded while holding a Dubious Disc.
Because the line needs two different items and normally two trades, it is easy to mix up which item belongs to which stage. This Porygon evolution guide lays out the order and the Pokémon Legends: Arceus shortcut.
Porygon Evolution

The standard Porygon evolution order is Porygon plus Upgrade, then Porygon2 plus Dubious Disc. Give Porygon the Upgrade and trade it to trigger Porygon2. After you receive Porygon2 back, replace the item with a Dubious Disc and trade it again to trigger Porygon-Z.
The items are consumed when they perform their evolution. You therefore need both an Upgrade and a Dubious Disc if you want to take one Porygon all the way to Porygon-Z through the normal trade system.
Porygon to Porygon2
Give Porygon an Upgrade as its held item, then complete an in-game trade. Porygon evolves into Porygon2 on the receiving side. Trade Porygon2 back if you are keeping the same Pokémon for the second stage.
The first half of the Porygon evolution will not work with a Dubious Disc. That item belongs to Porygon2, not the original Porygon.
Porygon2 to Porygon-Z
Once Porygon2 is back in your possession, give it a Dubious Disc and trade it again. This second trade triggers Porygon-Z. An Upgrade does not perform the second evolution.
The cleanest way to handle the Porygon evolution is to collect both items and arrange the return trades before you begin. That avoids getting stuck halfway through the line.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Method
Legends: Arceus removes the trade requirement. Use an Upgrade directly on Porygon to get Porygon2, then use a Dubious Disc directly on Porygon2 to get Porygon-Z. Each item is still tied to the same stage.
This solo version of the Porygon evolution is useful if you do not have a trade partner. Moving a Pokémon through Pokémon HOME alone does not normally count as a trade evolution in titles that still use the standard system.
Why Porygon Is Not Evolving
Check the stage and item pairing first. Porygon needs Upgrade; Porygon2 needs Dubious Disc. In standard trade-based games, the correct item must be held during an actual in-game trade.
An Everstone can also interfere with normal evolution, so remove it. If you are using Legends: Arceus, do not give the items to hold; use them directly from the inventory for the Porygon evolution.
Training Porygon-Z
Porygon-Z is a Normal-type special attacker in many builds. Our physical vs special moves guide, STAB guide, and Nature guide explain the systems that matter once the evolution line is complete.
For the species profile after the evolution, the official Pokémon Pokédex entry for Porygon-Z lists its typing, abilities, and basic Pokédex information. That gives you a useful reference once the evolution itself is finished.
Porygon Evolution Checklist
Does Porygon-Z Need a Specific Level?
The special requirement described above is the part that controls the Porygon evolution. If a minimum level is part of that method, it is stated in the relevant section. Otherwise, levelling by itself will not replace the required friendship, item, trade, battle condition, or game-specific trigger.
If you already have a high-level Pokémon, that does not mean you have missed the Porygon evolution. Most special evolutions remain available later as long as the correct conditions can still be met in a compatible game.
Use a Trusted Trade Partner for Both Stages
A complete Porygon line can require sending the same Pokémon away twice in games that retain the classic trade system. Arrange both return trades in advance, especially if your Porygon has a desirable Nature, ribbons, a mark, or training you do not want to lose.
After the first return, open Porygon2’s held-item slot and replace the consumed Upgrade with a Dubious Disc before trading again. Forgetting that item swap is the most obvious way to perform the second trade without getting Porygon-Z.
The Porygon evolution checklist is Upgrade for Porygon, Dubious Disc for Porygon2, and the correct trade or direct-item method for the game. Keep the item order straight and the two-stage line is predictable.
The only reason the Porygon evolution feels complicated is that it repeats the trade-item mechanic twice. Treat Porygon2 as a separate second step and it becomes much easier to manage.
