Fire-type Pokémon are known for powerful attacks, high offensive pressure and moves that can inflict the burn status condition. They are especially effective against Grass, Ice, Bug and Steel-type Pokémon, although Water, Ground and Rock-type attacks can quickly put them in danger.

What Are Fire-Type Pokémon Weak Against?
Pure Fire-type Pokémon are weak against three attacking types:
- Water
- Ground
- Rock
Moves belonging to these types are normally super effective against Fire-type Pokémon and deal increased damage.
Water-type attacks are one of the most obvious threats, while Ground and Rock-type moves are also commonly used for battle coverage. Moves such as Earthquake and Rock Slide can make these weaknesses particularly important when building a team around a Fire-type Pokémon.
A Pokémon with two types may have a different set of weaknesses. Its second type can remove one of the usual Fire weaknesses, introduce new weaknesses or create a 4× weakness to a particular attacking type.
What Are Fire-Type Pokémon Strong Against?
Fire-type moves are super effective against:
- Grass-type Pokémon
- Ice-type Pokémon
- Bug-type Pokémon
- Steel-type Pokémon
This gives Fire-type Pokémon useful offensive coverage against four different types.
Their advantage over Steel-type Pokémon is particularly valuable because Steel has a large number of defensive resistances. Fire-type moves can also be useful against Grass and Bug Pokémon that combine both types, as these Pokémon may take 4× type-effectiveness damage from Fire attacks.
The defending Pokémon’s second type must still be considered. A Pokémon may resist Fire through one of its types while being weak through the other, resulting in neutral damage overall.
What Types Resist Fire-Type Moves?
Fire-type moves are not very effective against:
- Fire
- Water
- Rock
- Dragon
These types resist Fire-type damage, so attacks will normally deal less damage than usual.
Water and Rock-type Pokémon are particularly difficult opponents for many Fire types because they resist Fire moves while also being able to hit Fire Pokémon for super-effective damage.
Using coverage moves can help a Fire-type Pokémon deal with resistant opponents. Grass-type moves can provide an answer to Water, Ground and Rock Pokémon, while Fighting or Ground-type coverage may help against certain Rock and Fire-type opponents.
What Types Do Fire Pokémon Resist?
Pure Fire-type Pokémon resist attacks from:
- Fire
- Grass
- Ice
- Bug
- Steel
- Fairy
These six resistances can make Fire-type Pokémon useful when switching into attacks that would threaten other members of a team.
Their resistance to Ice and Fairy-type moves can be particularly useful, while resistance to Grass, Bug and Steel gives Fire Pokémon several opportunities to enter battle safely.
Individual defensive performance still depends on the Pokémon’s stats, Ability and secondary type. Having several resistances does not necessarily make every Fire-type Pokémon defensively strong.
Are Fire-Type Pokémon Good?
Fire-type Pokémon can be excellent offensive team members. Many have strong Attack or Special Attack stats and access to powerful moves capable of dealing immediate damage.
Their main advantages include:
- Super-effective damage against four types
- Resistance to six types
- Access to powerful physical and special moves
- The ability to inflict burns
- Strong performance during harsh sunlight
- Useful coverage against defensive Steel-type Pokémon
Their weaknesses to Water, Ground and Rock can still be difficult to manage. These attacking types are widely used, and entry hazards such as Stealth Rock may also be a concern for some Fire-type Pokémon.
The effectiveness of a Fire Pokémon ultimately depends on its complete typing, stats, Ability, available moves and role within the team.
Fire-Type Pokémon in Battle
Fire-type Pokémon are commonly used as fast attackers, wallbreakers or setup sweepers. Some are also capable defensive Pokémon thanks to their collection of useful resistances.
When choosing a Fire-type Pokémon, consider:
- Whether it uses physical or special attacks
- Its Speed
- Its secondary type
- Its available coverage moves
- Its Ability
- Its weakness to common Water, Ground and Rock attacks
- Whether the rest of the team can safely handle its counters
Grass-type teammates can help threaten Water, Ground and Rock Pokémon. Water-type teammates may also handle Ground and Rock opponents, while Flying-type Pokémon can provide immunity to Ground-type attacks.
A balanced team should avoid placing too much pressure on the Fire Pokémon to defeat every opponent weak to Fire.
Pure Fire-Type and Dual-Type Pokémon
Pure Fire-type Pokémon follow the standard Fire strengths, weaknesses and resistances.
Dual-type Fire Pokémon combine Fire with another type, which can substantially change their defensive matchup.
A Fire and Flying-type Pokémon, for example, is immune to Ground-type attacks because of its Flying typing, but it is especially vulnerable to Rock-type moves. Meanwhile, a Fire and Steel-type Pokémon gains a large collection of resistances but develops a major weakness to Ground-type attacks.
A second type can therefore make a Fire Pokémon safer against one opponent while leaving it more vulnerable to another. Always check both types before choosing an attack.
Best Moves for Fire-Type Pokémon
The best Fire-type move depends on the Pokémon’s stats, Ability and the battle format in which it is being used.
Common Fire-type attacks include:
- Flamethrower
- Fire Blast
- Heat Wave
- Overheat
- Flare Blitz
- Fire Punch
- Flame Charge
- Mystical Fire
- Eruption
- Lava Plume
Physical attackers may prefer moves such as Flare Blitz or Fire Punch, while special attackers can make better use of Flamethrower, Fire Blast or Overheat.
Some Fire moves prioritise reliability, while others trade accuracy or create drawbacks in exchange for greater power. Moves such as Flame Charge can also provide additional effects rather than focusing only on damage.
Fire-Type Moves and the Burn Status
Many Fire-type moves have a chance to burn the target.
A burned Pokémon loses health over time, and burns can also reduce the damage caused by many physical attacks. This allows some Fire-type Pokémon to weaken physical attackers while gradually wearing them down.
Not every Fire move causes burns, and the likelihood depends on the individual move being used. Some status moves can also burn an opponent without dealing direct damage.
Fire-type Pokémon themselves are normally protected from receiving the burn status condition through standard battle effects.
How Weather Affects Fire-Type Moves
Harsh sunlight increases the power of Fire-type attacks while reducing the effectiveness of Water-type attacks.
This can make Fire Pokémon considerably more dangerous on teams built around sunlight. Certain moves, Abilities and Pokémon are specifically designed to benefit from sunny weather.
Rain has the opposite general effect, weakening Fire-type attacks while increasing the power of Water-type moves. Fire Pokémon may therefore struggle against teams designed around rainy weather unless they have suitable coverage or support.
Weather effects can vary between games and battle formats, so their exact behaviour should always be checked for the game being played.
