Ability Patches: How Hidden Abilities Work
Ability Patches are rare training items that can give a Pokémon access to its species’ Hidden Ability when that species has one. They were introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion and have become one of the most useful ways to repair an otherwise excellent Pokémon.
That matters because an Ability can completely change a build. Instead of hunting for another shiny, Legendary or raid catch with the correct rare Ability, you can often keep the Pokémon you already have and change the Ability directly.
What Ability Patches do

The item is designed around Hidden Abilities. The official Crown Tundra feature page states that using a Patch can change a Pokémon’s Ability to its species’ Hidden Ability, provided that species actually has one.
The item does not invent a new Ability for the species. If the Pokémon has no Hidden Ability in the game data, there is nothing for the Patch to unlock.
The official Crown Tundra features page introduced the item as a way to change a Pokémon’s Ability to its species’ Hidden Ability when one is available.
Ability Patches vs Ability Capsules
Patches and Ability Capsules solve different problems. An Ability Capsule normally switches between the standard Ability slots available to a species. A Patch is the item associated with moving to the Hidden Ability.
If a Pokémon has two normal Abilities and you simply want the other normal one, using a rarer Patch would be unnecessary. Check the species’ possible Abilities first so you know which item actually matches the change you need.
When Ability Patches are worth using
Ability Patches are best saved for a Pokémon where the Hidden Ability materially improves the build. That can include a competitive Pokémon whose strategy depends on a particular effect, a raid build that needs better survivability or an event Pokémon that cannot easily be replaced.
Rarity alone is not a reason to spend one. Some Pokémon prefer a normal Ability, and some Hidden Abilities are only useful on very specific teams. Compare the effects before spending the item. Ability Patches are worth the cost when they solve a specific build problem, not simply because the hidden option exists.
Can you use Ability Patches on shinies and Legendary Pokémon?
Yes, when the game allows that species to have the relevant Hidden Ability. This is one of the strongest reasons to keep a Patch available. A rare shiny or one-per-save Legendary with the wrong Ability can often be corrected without changing the individual Pokémon.
Restrictions can exist for specific forms, special Pokémon or games, so the species’ actual Ability list still matters. A Patch cannot bypass an Ability that is fixed by the game’s data.
Do Ability Patches affect breeding?
Once a Pokémon has access to its Hidden Ability, it can interact with the breeding rules for Hidden Abilities in games where breeding is available. Passing the Hidden Ability to offspring is not guaranteed, and the exact parent rules vary across generations.
If your goal is simply to battle with the parent, breeding is not required. If your goal is to create a whole line of Pokémon with the Hidden Ability, one correctly prepared parent can be the starting point.
How to get Ability Patches
Ability Patches are intentionally treated as valuable, so their source changes with each game. Sword and Shield tied them to Crown Tundra content, while later titles use their own high-level battle, raid or item-generation systems.
Because the acquisition method is game-specific, avoid following an old farming route without checking the title. The purpose of the item is consistent even when the currency, vendor or reward source moves.
Check the Ability before you spend the item
Some species have a normal Ability that is more useful than the hidden option for a particular format. Weather teams, doubles strategies and raid builds can value completely different effects, so the rarest Ability is not automatically the best choice.
If you are copying a build, make sure it was written for the same game and battle format. Ability effects, available moves and surrounding mechanics can change between generations, and an old recommendation may not reflect the role you are building now.
Changing the Ability is only one part of training. Check Pokémon Natures, Pokémon EVs and Pokémon IVs before calling the build finished. Hyper Training and Bottle Caps can repair weak IV performance.
A Patch is most valuable when it completes a Pokémon you already want to keep. Use them deliberately, verify that the Hidden Ability is genuinely part of the build, and save the rarer resource when the normal Ability already does the job.
