Hidden Abilities: What They Are and How to Get Them
Hidden Abilities are rare alternative Abilities that some Pokémon species can have instead of their usual Ability options. They can completely change how a Pokémon plays, turning an ordinary set into a better attacker, defender, support Pokémon or weather partner.
A Hidden Ability is not automatically stronger. The useful one depends on the species and the team around it. The main challenge is that Hidden Abilities are usually obtained through special encounter methods, items, events or breeding rather than being equally common on every wild Pokémon.
How Hidden Abilities differ from normal Abilities

Many species have one or two standard Abilities and a separate Hidden Ability. For example, the official Pokémon Sword and Shield site highlights Corviknight’s Hidden Ability Mirror Armor, which reflects stat-lowering effects back at the source instead of using one of Corviknight’s normal Ability options.
Hidden Abilities use the same Ability slot in battle as any other Ability. The word hidden describes how the Ability is obtained, not a second passive effect layered on top of the normal one.
The official rare Ability feature uses Corviknight’s Mirror Armor as an example of a rare alternative Ability that changes how the Pokémon functions in battle.
How to get Hidden Abilities
The method for obtaining Hidden Abilities changes from game to game. Pokémon Sword and Shield used Max Raid Battles as a major source, with some raid Pokémon able to appear with their Hidden Ability. Other generations have used special wild encounters, Friend Safari, Horde encounters, SOS battles, raids, events and transfer systems.
Because the encounter method is game-specific, check the title you are playing before farming a species. A method that worked in Sword and Shield may not be the correct route in Scarlet and Violet or an older game.
Ability Patches can unlock a Hidden Ability
Ability Patches are one of the cleanest modern ways to access Hidden Abilities. The item was introduced with The Crown Tundra in Pokémon Sword and Shield, where the official site describes it as changing a Pokémon’s Ability to its species’ Hidden Ability when one exists.
That is especially valuable for shinies, Legendary Pokémon or sentimental team members because you can improve the individual Pokémon you already own instead of hunting for another copy with the correct Ability.
Ability Capsules are not the same thing
An Ability Capsule normally switches between a species’ standard Ability options. It is not the item used to give a Pokémon its Hidden Ability. That distinction matters because Capsules are often easier to obtain than Patches, but they cannot solve the same problem.
If a species has only one standard Ability plus a Hidden Ability, using an Ability Capsule will not magically reveal the hidden option. You need a method that specifically allows Hidden Abilities.
Can Hidden Abilities be passed through breeding?
In modern breeding systems, a parent with its Hidden Ability can pass access to that Ability to offspring under the appropriate breeding rules. The chance is not guaranteed, which means you may need several Eggs before the baby has the Hidden Ability you want.
This makes one good Hidden Ability parent useful for building more Pokémon of the same species. Breeding also lets you work on Pokémon IVs and Nature at the same time, although the exact breeding mechanics differ between generations.
Are Hidden Abilities always better?
No. Hidden Abilities can be excellent, mediocre or actively worse for a particular strategy. Some standard Abilities provide essential immunity, weather control or defensive value that a Hidden Ability does not. Always compare the actual effects rather than choosing the rare option automatically.
Competitive sets often settle on one Ability because it fits the role, but a different format or move set can change that choice. Hidden Abilities are another team-building option, not an upgrade tier that overrides every normal Ability.
When should you use resources on a Hidden Ability?
Use rare resources when the Ability changes something important about the build. If the Pokémon’s best strategy depends on its hidden option, an Ability Patch can save a lot of time. If both Abilities are equally useful, there is no reason to spend a scarce item just because Hidden Abilities sound more special.
Once the Ability is correct, you can finish the rest of the build with Pokémon Natures, EV training and Hyper Training. Hidden Abilities are one part of the finished Pokémon, not a replacement for the other training systems.
