Pokémon Friendship: How to Raise Friendship

Pokémon Friendship is a hidden relationship value used by evolutions, moves and other mechanics across the main series. It rises when you travel and care for a Pokémon, and several species will not evolve until that relationship is high enough.

The exact methods and thresholds have changed between generations, but the practical approach stays familiar: keep the Pokémon in your party, use it regularly, avoid repeated fainting, and take advantage of the friendship-boosting systems available in the game you are playing.

What Pokémon Friendship is used for

Pokémon Friendship is most commonly associated with evolutions such as Golbat into Crobat, Chansey into Blissey and several baby Pokémon. Eevee also uses friendship for Espeon and Umbreon in many games, with additional time-of-day or move conditions depending on the evolution.

Some moves have historically scaled with friendship, and modern games may also reward a close bond with small battle effects in story content. Because the system has been adjusted over time, an evolution guide for the specific game should be checked when a species has extra requirements.

The official Pokémon Camp feature is one game-specific example of spending time and interacting with your party, although the exact Friendship tools available vary by title.

How to raise Pokémon Friendship

Keeping a Pokémon in your active party and moving around with it is one of the safest long-term ways to build Pokémon Friendship. Leveling it up also helps in many games. Using vitamins and other care systems can add more progress depending on the generation.

Game-specific interaction features are another major source. Pokémon Sword and Shield lets you spend time with your team through Pokémon Camp, while Scarlet and Violet uses picnics. The official Sword and Shield camp page specifically encourages playing with Pokémon and getting to know them better.

Use a Soothe Bell when available

The Soothe Bell is the classic held item for accelerating Pokémon Friendship gains. If the game you are playing includes it, give it to the Pokémon you are trying to evolve before you start walking, leveling or using other friendship-raising actions.

A Luxury Ball can also help with friendship growth for Pokémon caught in one, depending on the game. These bonuses are most useful when you are deliberately preparing a friendship evolution instead of simply waiting for the value to rise during normal play.

What lowers friendship?

Repeated fainting can reduce Pokémon Friendship in a number of main-series games, particularly when the Pokémon faints against much stronger opponents. Certain bitter herbal medicines have also traditionally reduced friendship even though they restore HP or cure status conditions.

You do not need to panic if a Pokémon faints once. The system is designed to be recoverable. The point is simply to avoid using friendship-lowering options over and over while you are trying to hit an evolution requirement quickly.

How to check Pokémon Friendship

Most games include an NPC, app, feature or dialogue system that gives you an approximate friendship reading. The wording varies, so you may see a broad description rather than a visible number. Some newer games also make the bond easier to infer through picnic or camp interactions.

If you are trying to trigger an evolution, check the Pokémon’s other requirements as well. A high friendship value may still need a level-up, a certain time of day, a known move or another condition before the evolution happens.

Friendship and affection are not always the same system

Older games sometimes separated Pokémon Friendship from affection systems introduced through features such as Pokémon-Amie. Later generations merged or reworked parts of those mechanics. That history is why two guides for different games can use similar words while describing slightly different values.

For a current playthrough, the safest approach is to follow the friendship method for that title rather than trying to copy an exact number from a much older generation. The broad idea of caring for and travelling with the Pokémon remains consistent.

The fastest practical friendship routine

For most players, a simple Pokémon Friendship routine works well: place the Pokémon in your party, give it a Soothe Bell if you have one, walk while progressing other tasks, level it normally, and use the game’s camp or picnic feature when available.

Then check the friendship evaluator before spending more time grinding. If the Pokémon still will not evolve, the missing piece may not be Pokémon Friendship at all. It may be time of day, a specific move, a location or another evolution rule tied to that species.
